Do you like porn? If you’re a gay man, probably. But while the product is meant to be a mindless escape, its production is a rich and controversial subject, even in a community legendarily open about sexuality.

When the phrase “Bel Ami” is uttered, very few gay men think first of Guy de Maupassant’s second novel. Instead, images of countless “beautiful friends”—pornstars—from Eastern Europe come to mind, young men like Lukas Ridgeston and Johan Paulik, with eye-popping endowments and legit movie-star looks and a performance style worlds away (Bratislava, to be exact) from the moves that characterize American porn films. There’s almost a wholesome quality to Bel Ami’s smut, even if the action is as dirty as the business.

“Gay” porn was never dominated by gay models, and in the case of Bel Ami, not even half of the employees are gay.

Speaking of which, the porn industry has undergone a slew of changes in recent years. Beaten down by easy access to free porn online, crowded out by amateur exhibitionists and in some cases ill-equipped to adapt to the market’s declining interest in DVDs as opposed to downloads, video companies have come and gone and publishers have mostly just gone.

Then there is the hot-button issue of bareback porn, which for many years during the onset of the AIDS crisis was absolutely taboo—Can actors be assured of the status of their co-stars? Does marketing it encourage unsafe sex among viewers? Does anyone care if the money is there?—but which has quickly become a major aspect of the industry in spite of some companies’ seemingly principled refusals to succumb to it.

With the news that the venerable COLT has filed for bankruptcy, I wondered how other companies were faring and wanted to bring up some of the issues that surround the porn industry. What better company to focus on than one of the largest still standing? What follows is my interview with George Duroy, the founder and president of Bel Ami. He, more than anyone, has an interest in figuring out if gay men will automatically think of his product when the phrase “Bel Ami” is uttered in the future.

Towleroad: When did Bel Ami come into existence?

George Duroy: I first used the Bel Ami name in May 1991, but I started the company only in the fall of 1993 after shooting my first film, Tender Strangers.

T: What were the early years like compared to now?

GD: Less hectic, more fun.

T: Do you intentionally cater to an American or any other market?

GD: Fifty percent of our customers are American and another twenty percent use English as their first language. Bel Ami was originally created as an American company and moved to Central Europe only after George W. Bush declared eradicating pornography to be one of his priorities. The whole company is still run according to the American regulations, and all the systems are in English. All the important employees are required to speak English; our COO is Australian and we have five American employees (another thirty are Czech, Slovak or Hungarian). I write most of my notes in English automatically.

T: Bel Ami is famous for its models; how do you find them?

GD: Nowadays, mostly through scouts. We have four full-time scouts working exclusively for us and there are others who work with us on a non-exclusive basis. Of course, some boys contact us directly or through our business partners. Occasionally, I meet somebody socially and he ends up as a model.

T: Are all your models exclusive? What qualities does a model have to have to be considered for Bel Ami?

GD: I’d say eighty percent of them are exclusive. Being an exclusive is not only about looks anymore. A certain “look” is automatic. But personality, reliability and a reasonable level of wholesomeness are equally important. Quite often, we take them for long trips. So the question is—can I have him around for three weeks? Is he able to get along with other people? Does he have a drug problem? Is he loyal? Would he resist escort offers while working for us? If any of these questions are answered unsatisfactorily, I wouldn’t take that boy as an exclusive.

T: I’ve heard lots of models are “straight”. Is that true? Is this a cultural difference, because I think it’s hard for some Americans to see them enjoying enthusiastic sex with men, then identifying as straight.

GD: “Gay” porn was never dominated by gay models, and in the case of Bel Ami, not even half of the employees are gay. (In the last three years, we had seven babies born to our employees.) Gay porn should be more accurately called “all-male porn”. I don’t see this necessarily as a cultural difference—most of the models working for Corbin Fisher or Sean Cody are straight as well. I know some gay models in the U.S. who claimed to be straight to get a job with some of the American Studios.

On the other hand, I can’t imagine that a really STRAIGHT man would be able to perform the way our models perform, no matter what they think they are. I, for one, certainly wouldn’t be able to be “straight for pay”. We live in a world where traditional labels don’t apply anymore, partly as a result of gay emancipation. Being gay is not taboo anymore, and I’d say at least thirty percent of city boys in the Central European region happily experiment with their sexuality. Many enjoy it, but they wouldn’t think of themselves as being gay. They simply mingle freely, going with their girlfriends to gay bars and fondling other boys in front of girls. And now tell me—what is their orientation?

Sometimes I joke, saying that very few gay men are so enthusiastic during sex with other boys as these “straight” boys. I suspect that gay men lost their monopoly on gay sex as a part of their social acceptance. Or that experimenting with all-male sex is simply “in”.

T: Are models ever harassed or do they ever regret being in porn? What happens to them after their days as stars in your films; where is Lukas today, for example?

GD: Lukas is still a part of the company. About thirty percent of our employees are models. In a production unit, most of them are either active models (like Luke Hamill or Todd Rosset) or ex-models (Lukas, Johan, Marty). Many of our boys are university students and come from regular, middle-class families. And quite a few are bright. For example, Mark Aubrey is our lawyer while Claude Cocteau built and runs our Web site. Dolph Lambert will get his I.T. degree soon, and Luke has one more year to go to get his degree in management. In September, we will send a number of models for intense language courses to Cape Town so we can start to shoot with them in English. Our initial selection usually pays off. On average, our models stay with the company at least five years.

Are they ever harassed? Yes, they are. Sometimes really badly. Recently, Kris Evans lost his job with the police force and the tabloids got involved. It is never pleasant, often stressful, yet always good for their integrity and their ability to defend their position.

T: Who are your favorite models of all time?

GD: Some of them are better performers, others better companions, but I like them all. I have to be careful. They can be pretty jealous.

T: Bel Ami started doing bareback films a while ago. Some would call this irresponsible for encouraging viewers to do it, others would point out it takes risks with the health of the models and others don’t care—they just like it. What do you think about the various reactions to barebacking in porn, and what precautions does Bel Ami take on bareback sets?

GD: I guess we’ve released no more than twelve to fourteen condom-free episodes in all these years. But this question requires a more elaborate answer, even though I have tried to explain my position many times with negligible effect. But let’s try it again:

Bel Ami is the only company in this business which (in seventeen years) hasn’t had a single case of ANY STD on the set. I have the good luck to work in a country where, in the first twenty-five years of the AIDS epidemic, only eight people died of HIV infection as compared to 400,000 in the U.S. If I lived in California, I certainly wouldn’t shoot without condoms, but I see no special reason to stick to the same rules here. Eight deaths in twenty-five years doesn’t constitute an epidemic—many more people die of ordinary flu here. Therefore, I think that while in the U.S. bareback equals Russian roulette, it is here merely condom-free.

To put it another way, we also don’t keep a hurricane watch here, just because the Gulf of Mexico has that problem. I also don’t think that not using condoms is a single reason for the AIDS epidemic, otherwise everybody in Slovakia would be dead already. I know very few people in this country who use condoms, and all the rest are perfectly healthy. I suspect that it has something to do also with alcohol, drug abuse, promiscuity and the whole gay party/club culture — that’s what creates a really deadly mix.

I’d also like to say that I carefully followed the situation for twenty years before coming to this conclusion. It doesn’t mean, of course, that something can’t happen tomorrow on my set. But the chance a model would die in a car accident is about a thousand times higher.

As for encouraging the viewer: I don’t encourage and I don’t promote. If I did, I’d be much richer now. I promoted condoms and healthy sex for seventeen years in my films. In exchange for my goodwill, I lost about thirty percent of my customers at one point. I am unaware of a single case of somebody paying for my films simply because I was promoting safe sex. But I got a lot of hate mail for being “vanilla” and “boring”.

Not a single gay lifestyle magazine—all of them owned by our major business partners—would ever do an interview with me or promote my business in appreciation of our work. Most of them didn’t even acknowledge in these magazines that we (or any other porn studio) exists. Mainstream gay media treats porn like dirt, but keep using porn profits to finance their operations. If they want to promote safe sex, they should start promoting my safe-sex porn in their flagship glossy magazines. That is if they really believe we influence public sexual behavior that much. And if it is not so, then it would seem we simply create “dirty” fantasies, and condoms don’t come into play.

The day The Advocate will publish its first ad for BelAmiOnline or some other porn company, I’ll stop my occasional condom-free adventures. For the time being, I’ll settle for compromise and try to stay afloat. Quite a monologue for somebody who still shoots ninety percent of his production using condoms!

T: What’s your favorite film you’ve put out?

GD: I shot or produced quite a few films, but the only one I shot the way I planned is An American in Prague. So I like it. But my personal favorite is Summer Camp. It simply has all the elements I like in erotica.

T: Have you ever shot a film that you had to scrap or do you have any other disaster stories?

GD: I keep scrapping all the time. I daresay I am the biggest porn scrapper in history. We have a whole line of films based on scrapped material, the Out at Last series. In the beginning of each episode, I explain where it was supposed to be and why it wasn’t. Disaster stories…I could write a whole book about that.

T: What do you think of COLT being put out to pasture?

GD: Although I have certainly read of COLT’s filing for bankruptcy, I have been assured by people intimate with the California porn scene that the owners themselves remain fully financially secure. As you can imagine, this is a great relief to me, as if a giant burden has been lifted from my gay shoulders. Somewhere — I think at a party — I overheard someone say that Bernie Madoff himself could take lessons from the studio’s owners. But of course I have no personal knowledge of their teaching credentials. Besides, I’ve only been in the business for 17 years…I could hardly be expected to comment on the veracity of any such allegations. They own Bel Ami only $80,000, and I am glad I had the opportunity to contribute to their business experiment.

T: Is there a commercial future for gay porn?

GD: In the winter of 2008, my feelings about the future and quality of gay porn were quite pessimistic. The problem was, I didn’t pay any attention to our Web property. I didn’t even have a computer at home. When I got our 2008 financial report, it was clear to me that I either had to start paying attention or I’d face forced retirement along the lines of COLT—even though BelAmiOnline’s numbers were still better than any other in the industry. But to be better than COLT or Falcon can’t be considered a victory. It’s like thinking that being aboard the Lusitania is safer than the Titanic.

So I spent half a year making drastic changes and reading all the unflattering comments on forums without getting resentful. In June 2009, we released a new site. In June 2010, our membership was seventy percent up and traffic had more than doubled—to one million individual visitors a month. So, of course, I am less gloomy now. Even our DVD numbers are up, and that came as a real surprise to me. I guess that the fact that a lot of our competitors are out of the picture helped.

So, to answer your question, what’s happening in the business now is a real massacre, no doubt about it. But not all the pigs are being slaughtered. The biggest swine are dying, but many sucklings are doing just fine. Commercial porn won’t disappear, but after this is over, the whole porn business will be a VERY different place.

T: Will you stop making DVDs and go all-download?

Bel Ami: DVDs keep surprising me. For example, Taboo, we expect to sell over eight thousand units. Regular sales for new films are still around four to five thousand units for us even though I know not everybody is so fortunate. At this moment, we are still making more than a million dollars a year on DVDs and another $500,000 in our store and from VOD. So I am not in a hurry to close it down. Next year, we are preparing twenty-four releases as compared to eighteen this year. I’d prefer to be out of the DVD business because to run both online and film operations is simply too much work. So I hope that within the next two years we would become an exclusively online business. This fall, we are starting another Web site and we are working on a number of other Internet projects. So in case Mr. Bernanke wouldn’t start his helicopter scheme, we might succeed.

T: Does the loss of most gay-porn print magazines hurt Bel Ami?

GD: I miss them personally because I like printed material, but for our sales it doesn’t make any difference.

T: You like printed material — are you a porn consumer yourself? Whose work, aside from your own, do you admire?

GD: I used to be a big consumer, but not anymore. When I watch films, I need not only erotic stimulation. I need also aesthetical quality, ideally some really potent filmmaking…or at least a hint of it. (Oh, my — now I really sound Victorian.) On this level, porn degenerated a lot. Not only porn, I guess. So all the “potent” porn makers are either dead or out of business! But from the “impotent” ones—I have to say that the most consistent ones are Sean Cody and Corbin Fisher. (Here, I am testing their sense of humor, of course. I mean it as a flattery.)

T: What keeps Bel Ami successful?

GD: I am not aware of having any business model, but I keep following a few simple rules:

I am trying to shoot porn which I’d like to watch.
I am careful about selecting people I work with and try to handle them with respect. It mostly pays off.
I understand that times are changing and I am an old fart. Therefore, I give a lot of creative freedom to my younger colleagues. I run the company, but don’t insist on shooting everything myself. The company must be a comfortable home to many people—we have thirty-five full-time employees and forty models.
Customers sometimes piss me off, but I don’t underestimate them. On the other hand, I wouldn’t let them run the show.
And finally, I am trying not to take setbacks and losses too seriously. In the end, life (and business, too) is only a temporary situation. Take it as a game; it’ll be much more fun.

I wasn’t so relaxed and blasé originally. I even went to a shrink at a certain point. He was so amused by my life story that he offered to treat me for free. When I walked out of his office and saw all the really desperate people, I told myself, “If it is fun for the shrink, it can’t be so bad.” And started to take it easy again.

I am packing for Cape Town right now – as you read these words I will already be in South Africa – and gearing up for what will probably be the biggest single shoot in Bel Ami history. A few days after I arrive I’ll be followed by a complete Bel Ami crew: cameramen, production managers, interpreters, drivers, assistants, a person in charge of archiving materials and, of course, models (27 of them!) who are arriving in two big groups from airports in Vienna and Budapest.

..the last one was a real disaster. So keep your dicks crossed for me.

One week later, we will be joined by photographers and occasional celebrity visitors. I have to admit to being a bit nervous about the whole venture. Considering the actual shape of the porn industry right now, the whole thing seems to be out of proportion.

It is our first African trip following a four-year pause – and the last one was a real disaster. So keep your dicks crossed for me. If you pray enough to Dionysus, you’ll get a new website as a result plus great summer programming. If you don’t pray enough, you’ll get increased fees instead to foot the bill.

January and February are traditionally slow months here at Bel Ami. Firstly, the weather is not merely cold – it is Siberian. Secondly, the camera people edit as much material as they possibly can to have enough time for spring and summer shoots. Thirdly, we are accumulating funds for the March Cape Town projects which I planned a bit too generously and our accountants are getting desperate. March happens to be also tax month. (There will be seven cameramen and thirty models not to count rest of the crew going).

March will be followed by an April co-production with Corbin Fisher in Central America and the models are scheduled to travel to do rather exotic assignments in locations like Istanbul, Israel or Nevada. I am quite busy, too. I must prepare newsletters and programming for three months ahead of time.

The good news is that you’ll get monthly updates on many of your favorites: Kris Evans and Trevor Yates will appear regularly. A junior team of yummy 18-20 y/o newcomers is being prepared including rather over-sized blond cousin of Dolph Lambert who is still blushing while having sex.

And finally: we acquired a new puppy. Ariel Vanean has a new dog, Sisi. Or Sissy? Who the hell knows – and she doesn’t care anyway!

Well, I am writing this letter three days before Christmas day. I’ve spent the whole afternoon cooking Kapustnica (A traditional sourkraut soup with lots of smoked meat, dried wild mushrooms, dried plums and tons of different sausages). Shopping took three hours (You have to taste and select the right homemade stuff on the local markets), cooking another three hours and “post-production” and cleaning another two. So I am exhausted.

Todd Rosset helped with the shopping, Manuel and Alex with the cooking and Luke, who returned late from School, with the rest of it. So we have now huge container for all the employees and models for our 16th Christmas Lunch. Mostly the same team as in 1993. New models, of course… Bit of Miracle!

I plan to lose at least 50 pounds.

It was a good year for the Bel Ami team. (And, I hope for customers and fans as well). Business grew significantly and we completed the transition to becoming a primarily online operation. (Well, we are still going to release about 20 films next year but they are now based mainly on our internet programming). In 2010 we plan to finalize improvements on the existing site and to release a new complementary one to test a completely new approach to shooting porn. And of course we plan to gradually introduce globalization in the company and start working with more international talent…. Well, and I plan to lose at least 50 pounds. And now I am going to taste the Kapustnica to make sure it is up to my usual (high) standards.

Kapustnica recipe

Ingredients:

Pork ribs
Smoked joint of Pork
1 smoked sausage
100g of dried mushrooms
Sour cabbage
Potatoes (4-5)
Oxo cubes (x2)
Onions (x2)

Begin by cooking the pork ribs and the joint of smoked pork, together with the sausage, in a pot with 4 liters of water. After 10 minutes, when the water is boiling, add the dry mushrooms and let it cook until the meat is halftender.Then add the sour cabbage and its juices to the pot and cook it again for about an hour. Half way through the hour, add 2 whole onions, a meat and a vegetable oxo cube and 1dcl of white wine.

Make some ‘zaprazka’, which is prepared from oil, pepper, paprika and water, and then thickened with flour. When the hour is up, add the whole, peeled potatoes and ‘zaprazka’, and stir. Then, let it cook for a further five minutes, adding more spices according to taste.

When the cooking is finished serve it together with thick noodles, in a soup bowl.

After three and half years I have returned to the scene of crime.
This article I am writing in Cape Town once again. (Rather lazily and unwillingly – Luke is pulling down his shorts and parading around in nude, oiling himself for a sunbath and arguing about prices on the local market).

The reason for being in CT is simple: I am preparing the situation for a major winter shoot and possible BelAmi Photo School, which would be opened for the first time for our customers and fans (and -hopefully – help to pay the bill for the location rentals, of course.) You’ll learn more about it in the top part of this newsletter.

..don’t worry about economy. Bernanke promised to fix it…

The other reason is to pre-shoot material for a new complementary website which we are preparing for next year. (All of your favorites and a whole new group of fresh 18-19 years old models.) This time we are meeting also some South African boys for interviews .

At the same time Marty, Johan, Lukas, Elliot are shooting in Budapest full speed, trying to finish projects before the announced flu pandemic starts in earnest. Today they finished a scene with Kris Evans, Vadim Farrell and Manuel Rios, wo new blond beauties which will remind you of a young Josh Elliot, and a BJ marathon with 10 new boys… and… and so on.

I guess that this article is about as lazy as I am at this moment so I’ll better go to check some locations.

This time I gave in and rented a small helicopter to make Luke happy. I just hope he’ll dress for the occasion an put on his pants. (It would be embarrassing if the helicopter crashes and he is without pants). Hope some of you will join us in March. Who knows – may be we’ll discover some major talent. and if not, you’ll have some really good time.

And don’t worry about economy. Bernanke promised to fix it – and as you all know, he always keeps his promises.

This month I am not continuing my bitching favorites, but never fear as they will soon return. This month, instead, I am feeling seriously sexy. Of course, that is also the title of our new movie starring Brandon Manilow. Some of the scenes here featuring Brandon were filmed years ago and I have heard from our customers who want to know why they are being released now. Well, there is an interesting story to that.

A very different movie was to be filmed in March 2006 in Cape Town, South Africa. We had been filming in the picturesque city since 2002 and this was our eighth production trip. We had secured a beautiful hotel with landscaped grounds; it was quite lovely and our location scout assured us the hotel was aware of our intentions.

..we had a cast and crew of 20 people ready to begin filming the very next day, and no location at all.

Then we arrived and it all went very wrong. The hotel somehow was under the impression we were there for a fashion photo shoot, not to film porn. So we had a cast and crew of 20 people ready to begin filming the very next day, and no location at all. It was a total disaster; I really had to improvise.

For five days we flmed without knowing what kind of movie the episodes would become. All the while, our location scout was busy securing new locations. I shot two episodes in our rooms, just standalone scenes. Then one day at breakfast, I was reading the “Capetown Times” and there was a headline that jumped out at me: “Green Light to Pink Marriages.”

Suddenly, I had my idea! Already I knew our customers enjoyed Brandon Manilow and Josh Elliot together. So I decided they would play a couple and the movie would be about gay marriage; it was a complete improvisation.

We had secured a private home owned by a woman that all of our boys loved. She was quite a character. We were to film a party scene that turned into a huge orgy. But I realized it doesn’t usually happen that way. At these parties sometimes two people will steal away to an empty room or quiet corner and start having sex: blowjobs, rimming, fucking, whatever. This was a means to make multiple scenes out of one large group of boys.

The final scene was to feature Brandon and Josh in a flip-flop scene but neither one of them could bottom for various reasons. We tried to make it work and it did not. This was a love story with a romantic couple who drive the whole story and I could not have the final scene between them. I was pissed, I can tell you.

So because I have the luxury of having other material in reserve, and because I have them around all the time, I decided to store the film and wait until I could convince them to properly bottom for each other. I was almost sure it would work out. But when one of them was ready, the other was not. This went on and on until I had to give up on the idea. And so I had to think about what to do to make this story work.

After the original production what I had was too much material for one film, and not enough material for two films. I eventually used two episodes for other projects. I met with my team and we finally finished the film this year. We shot two new scenes this past summer, which you will see in Part Two next spring. And I improvised an ending that is a different angle on the original storyline.

I believe our customers will enjoy the cast for these films. Alex, Manuel and Brandon are still around, of course, and Paul Valery is still in contact with us and available to film again. But most of the other cast members are not currently active. Never fear, however, as I have plenty of episodes still in reserve for each member of this cast.

Careful analysis of some bitching (or comments) on our website shows that there are two all time favorites and several evergreens. I’d like to offer some explanation here even though biggest ‘bitchers’ (or bitches ?) will probably never read this article.

The most often heard complaint is about SHAVING PUBES. Most of our customers seem to be irritated by the fact that models are trimming or shaving their pubes. Some are even convinced I am lurking in the reception area with a razor in my hand, pulling down model’s pants and in case they show signs of fully grown pubes, I forcibly shave them right there on the spot, just to annoy them and to keep our subscription on a manageable level. (One customer even wrote to us that shaved models must have crabs). If this is the case it would be enough to tie me up and the problem would be solved instantly.

Unfortunately, the situation is bit more complex. From reason unknown to me (and beyond my control) young boys in the Central European region have arrived at the conclusion that shaving is IN and very hot and sexy. I keep fighting it on daily basis but, admittedly, it seems to be lost battle. No matter how much I plead or argue with them, they pretend to forget or not to understand. Let start with few questions: Do you sincerely believe that a straight boy can keep his dick rock hard for 2-3 hours of shooting in front of a camera crew because he is SOOO aroused and horny? (I recommend you to check some older porn. You’ll see very few hard bottoms. Did you ever asked why?) Did you ever hear the word caverject (or papaverin or triple mix or whatever)? Inject 100ml+ up your dick and I swear you’ll be SOOOOOOOOO aroused that you’ll be able to perform even in a lesbian nursing home flawlessly. Have you ever seen surgeon trying to put down a 9 hour long erection? (One of the potential and nastier side effects) If yes, you wouldn’t get an erection for quite a while. And you would stop lecturing me about what is hot, or accusing me of a soft bottom fetish. Or or or…

I don’t claim that every hard bottom in porn needs such strong chemical stimulation. Some of them are born with the ideal prostate.

You see some of them on our site with erections while bottoming. But if it is a constant feature of some website, you can bet your ass that this is what’s going on. The second of my highly educational contributions in this column was supposed to be about monetary matters related to porn companies, to correct some of the public misconceptions about our fabulous earnings. Unfortunately my webmaster Dehanoia (nothing to do with Paranoia) asked me to write about a more imminent issue: Orgy scenes and condom-free episodes from our rental shop being released for downloads over next few months. To avoid the repetition of the hysteria from 2005 when I was accused of switching to bareback I feel obliged to explain few things before being lynched this time.

1.Every month BelamiOnline will release one bonus orgy and one latex-free classic from our existing archive of episodes. They are going to be available for just four weeks from the release date for long time BA collectors and customers. Each scene will be accompanied by George Duroy‘s commentary in the commentary section.

2. In the orgy section you’ll get all the major orgies with more than 7 models released by BA from year 1994. Not necessarily in the original order.

3. In the condom-free section, you’ll get all the episodes we kept for rentals only(with exception of Tommy Hanson and Tim Hamilton which will be released as a part of the GREEK HOLIDAY online collectors edition later next year). Condom free suggests partners who are not using protection because there is no risk worth mentioning involved. I will talk about this topic more in this section in future. For time being you’ll have to take me for my word that there is a major difference between California and Slovakia as for HIV or STD risks. NONE of my models has EVER tested positive for ANY STD in the 15 years I am in business.

Interview with George Duroy in Mandate, The Bel Ami Catalogue, 1996

In the thousands of letters received by BelAmi the same questions have been asked over and over by interested viewers. Now, George Duroy responds to thoses “most asked” questions:

Q: How do you find your models?
A: In the beginning, when I was shooting stills, I put ads in the newspaper, and that was very successful; too succesful, in fact, because although tons of guys answered the ads, few were useable. So I realized that if I wanted to get good models, I must go out, find them, and approach them personally. If I see somebody I really like, I don’t start by going up to him and offering him a job in erotic films; I just ask if he’d be interested in either posting for photographs or being an extra in a video (in the larger productions we do use a lot of extras). Since BelAmi doesn’t just produce hard-core erotica, we can also use models for solo photography. This way if a model is reluctant to do full-action videos at first, there is a way he can ease into it, that is what he eventually wants.
I also employ talent scouts who know my taste and what kind of models I like to work with. I won’t take just anybody, so the scout really has a difficult task. One month fifty models came and I couldn’t use any of them. I’ve found it helpful to pre-screen potential talent via photographs (taken by the talent scout) before setting up interviews.
If I am interested in working with a model, in almost all cases, the first step is for me to do a photo layout with him and see how it works out. By this time the model and I are getting to know one another better and I will have ample opportunity to explain the different projects Bel Ami work on and how much money the model can earn. Doing photo work doesn’t pay nearly as well as being a participant in the videos, so it is really up to the model to decide how much money he wants to make with us.

Q: What can you tell us in general about the models you work with?
A: Most of BelAmi‘s models are between eighteen and twenty-one age range. About half of them are middle-class university students; very few are “street kids”. All of them do this because they are interested in making extra money; none would think of doing this for a “career”.
Bel Ami finds its models in Eastern Europe where I believe people are very sexual and where sex plays a major role in people’s daily lives. Eastern Europeans don’t share the American concepts of what is gay, what is heterosexual and what is bisexual. Although I have unfortunately found that models whose preferences are for other men are more difficult to work with, I don’t hire models based on their orientation. It doesn’t matter to me if he is homo-, hetero-, or bi-, only that he is sexual. All that having been said, it’s true that almost all of BelAmi‘s models live an outwardly heterosexual life-style; what they enjoy sexually is quite another matter, that much is obvious from viewing the videos.

Q: Now that you are concentrating on videos are there going to be any more photo layouts in monthly magazines?
A: Absolutely. You can look forward to seeing photo sets of our new models, most of whom also star in BelAmi‘s videos. Additionally, in going through our files to select photos for this catalog we disovered more than 20 models whose photographs, for one reason or another, were never published in any form. So we are planning to present those models in the future, as well as new models.

Q: Please tell us more about Lukas.
A: He’s a university student. An assistant of mine brought him to me and I didn’t expect too much at first. Of course I realized how good he looked, but he’s the type that the camera loves even more than the naked eye; I didn’t fully appreciate the magic until after the photos were developed. He’s also an incredibly good person. In the years I’ve worked with him I’ve never seen him get upset, raise his voice, or even be in bad humor. When he has problems he’s extremely open about dealing with them; he just has a very pleasant personality. he also can get a hard-on anytime he wants to – it never takes him more than twenty seconds to get it up and he stays hard as long as is necessary to film the scene!

Q: What about Martin Valko?
A: He was brought to me by a talent scout who found him living in a small city in Central Slovakia. he was actually one of many models recommended by this particular scout. When I started to do videos with Martin, I realized what a sexual person he is. He is also very professional and always prepared. He took a break from shooting for a while but fortunately for us he returned to film other episodes for Lukas’ Story 2 and Lukas’ Story 3.

Q: What can you say about Dano Sulik?
A: He’s a little devil! He loves every minute of every kind of scene; he’s just incredible. He has a hard-on even before I start to shoot; he’s a real little sex machine. And he’s also both the perfect top and perfect bottom – he might just be the most energetic top I’ve ever encountered!

Q: Where was Lukas and Ken Christy‘s scene from Tender Strangers shot?
A: It’s exactly on the border between Slovakia and Hungary, along the Danube River. It was built for a fairy tale film production. I used it again in Accidental Lovers – the episode with all the pilings of the house – it’s really all the same location. It’s a beautiful spot, but we had a real problem during filming because it was full of mosquitoes!

Q: How did you get away with doing that scene on the bus in Lukas’ Story?
A: I just rented the bus, which came complete with a municipal driver. The driver didn’t know what was going on; we just put papers up so that he couldn’t see what we were up to. When we were shooting the sex scenes I stopped the bus and told the driver I didn’t need him for awhile, so he sat in a store and waited.

Q: When was Sauna Paradiso shot?
A: In a fully-functioning sauna which I rented for two weeks. It was during the summertime and the sauna was closed for renovation. The owners needed money for repairs. They started the overhaul but didn’t have enough money to finish, because reconstruction of an old sauna is quite expensive.

Q: And what about the train in Pleasure Express?
A: I wanted to have another location like the sauna to pull the whole film together so it wouldn’t look like a series of loops. Telling the railway company that I was shooting a music video, I paid a lot of money to rent the coaches. but in planning the film I understimated the difficulty in using a moving train as a location for an entire film. It was in the pring and the lighting conditions changed constantly, first it was cloudy, then half an hour later it was sunny, and when the camera shot in another direction it was already sunset! In such a tight space there wasn’t room to use proper lighting equipment. There was also a railway man with us the whole time, sitting three or four compartments away from where we were shooting hard-core, not knowing the kind of film we were making. During a break he came back to where we were and noticed the heterosexual porn magazines which we had left lying around. He opened the magazines, look through them and said, “Wow, it is incredible what these women will do for money!”

Q: Are you going to make any more films for the Falcon International Collection?
A: I am happy to say that BelAmi‘s collaboration with Falcon will continue, but in a slightly different way than before. BelAmi willproduce a new series of Falcon International videos which I will supervise but not direct. From now on I plan only to direct films for my own BelAmi line. One of the more exciting things about this new arrangement is that I wll be developing new directors, giving talented people the opportunity to learn their craft while they work.

Q: What new BelAmi films are you working on?
A: I have already begun shooting episodes for a video called XXL. As you can figure out from the title, I’m using only super-well-endowed models for this one. It is tentatively scheduled for release sometime in 1997. I am currently contemplating other projects in countries which wold provide exotic backgrounds, for example Portugal and France. In keeping with this idea, Bel Ami is planning the first gay erotic video shot on location in Russia, using real Russian models. The performers for this project have already been selected and I’m now in the process of figuring out the optimal time to start filming. We have also decided to shoot an erotic documentary which incorporates actual footage of what goes on behind the scenes at Bel Ami: how we find models; how we work with them, interviews, etc.

Q: What can we expect from BelAmi within the next six months?
A: I am putting the final touches on a film called Playful Morning – it will be of the same genre as Frisky Summer, fun and fresh. Fans can expect the first Bel Ami double-feature in Spring 1997 – the working title is Young Pioneers. These films will usher in a more sophisticated Bel Ami line – more dialogue and great new music, and will feature at least 20 models.

Q: Do you want to make a film in the U.S.?
A: It’s not a question of desire. I would do it if the right opportunity presented itself, but it would have to be on my own terms. When I decided to shoot erotica, I also made a conscious decision to only work with those models and make only the tape of videos which reflect my own personal taste. Within our budget, I can’t possibly afford to hire all the models I want, use all the exotic locations I want, or take all the time I want to shoot. But within those limitations, I try to get as close as I can to my idea of quality erotica.
